One CLI to rule them all
.everyoneloves__top-leaderboard:empty,.everyoneloves__mid-leaderboard:empty,.everyoneloves__bot-mid-leaderboard:empty{ margin-bottom:0;
}
Different projects I am involved with concern themselves with different database systems, mainly Postgres and MariaDB, and to a lesser extent Oracle DB. In the cases where I connect directly to the database I prefer the CLI, as the rest of my work is also heavily terminal-based.
However, I find it hard to keep track of the different ways to query information, i.e. dt
vs. show tables;
, or d tablename
vs. desc[ribe] tablename;
, and suffer a bit under the cognitive overhead of these differences.
I was wondering whether someone else also did not want to use different commands for essentially the same thing and wrote a wrapper command-line client that can connect to either of the databases (the more, the merrier) while maintaining a consistent syntax for all meta-SQL queries. All of my google-fu has disappointed so far, I'm starting to think that it is not even possible.
Finally, there is always the option to "suck it up" and wait for the muscle memory to selectively kick in based on the prompt I am presented with when connecting. But technology exists to make our lives easier, so that is the last resort.
Is there a command-line interface that can connect both to MariaDB and Postgres, offering the same meta-commands for both systems?
