MySQL 8 using the wrong tmp directory

0

I have a query like so...

INSERT INTO table3
SELECT DISTINCT *
FROM table1
LEFT JOIN table2 on ...

And it uses a temp table. The query runs for about 60 seconds, then starts filling /tmp even though my tmpdir is set in /etc/my.cnf. The
/tmp has 2G available and on different disks than..
/data1/mysql8tmp/ with 3TB available on raid5 ssd

datadir = /data1/mysql8/mysql
tmpdir = /data1/mysql8tmp
innodb_tmpdir = /data1/mysql8tmp

show variables like "tmpdir";
+---------------+------------------+
| Variable_name | Value |
+---------------+------------------+
| tmpdir | /data1/mysql8tmp |
+---------------+------------------+

Shouldn't I expect MySQL to use the space in /data1/mysql8tmp ? I want this to run and finish because I am taking two tables and inserting into a new single table. This process is to restructure data. Also the two tables combined size is about 1.3TB.

Thanks in advance.
