Modelling price, discounts and inventory in a schema
I am making a database for a store with inventory and discounts (study project), and I'm having problems with a few situations.
- A discount can be for a category or a specific product. That's two different types with a same variable - ratio. Would it be possible to somehow abstract them both into a single entity?
- Where should the discount (price modifier) connect to? Should it point to the price, or only to the "sold product" entity?
- How exactly should the product attributes change in the application? Do I update the price and the inventory tables when I sell a product, or do I leave it as it is and figure out the changes based on "sold product" table history?
